New Amtrak Route Planned Between Iowa City and Chicago
(IRN)-There's progress toward a new Amtrak route between Chicago and Iowa City, including the Quad Cities. U. S. Sens Dick Durbin and Tom Harkin announced the U. S. Department of Transportation has awarded $230 million for design and construction.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari says most of the track is already in place; there must be a connection built east of Galesburg, and the route would include Naperville and the old Rock Island Railroad.

The schedule for the project is for completion in the year 2015. Magliari attributes the demand for the route to the popularity of Chicago and says neither Iowa City nor the Quad Cities have had Amtrak service in more than 30 years.
