Enrollment Still Strong at Community Colleges
Community College enrollment in the state of Illinois is at its second highest point in 27 years, and those students are taking more classes.

Enrollment statewide is at 379,000 students, down from 383,000 last fall, according to the Illinois Community College Board.

But, the board says the full-time equivalency number is at 225,000. Board spokesman Steve Moore says what's more, those students are taking many more classes.

"It's for the people who still use community college for baccalaureate transfer programs, they're using them for career changes or enhancement and the colleges are, in some cases, almost to capacity as to how much students they could handle."

Morse says classroom overcrowding is a problem, as is accessibility to weekend classes in some areas. That's to say nothing of the fact that the state still owes community colleges millions in state aid.

Officials locally at Carl Sandburg College say enrollment at the Galesburg campus is up several dozen students over last year, while students at the Bushnell and Carthage campuses are down, partly because not as many high schoolers are taking dual credit classes.
