| 17th District Candidates Finally Debate |
What was supposed to be a series of debates, that later became a plan for three, and later just one, has finally happened.
The 17th District Congressional Candidates, Democrat Incumbent Phil Hare, Republican Bobby Schilling, and Green Party nominee Roger Davis squared off in a debate taped in Davenport yesterday, and will air on public television station WQPT.
The candidates, among a host of other things, were asked if affordable health care could be considered an equal right. While none of the candidates directly answered that, Schilling says the new health care reforms didn't do the job.
"Primarily the cost issues, there is no tort reform in the program. There's 16,500 IRS agents added to the plan."
Davis says one key element was left out of the plan.
"The people have spoken and said they would like health care reform, but they left the people out of the reform in taking their advice and their opinion on the problem."
Hare accused Schilling of trying to take both sides of the health care reform debate.
"At the community caring conference forum that we had, he said he didn't want to repeal it, just wanted to pick portions of the bill that he didn't want, and in Springfield, Illinois last week, now he's back to wanting to repeal the bill."
The three candidates also answered questions on jobs, repealing tax cuts enacted under the George W. Bush administration, the 2012 Farm Bill, Social Security, and others.
Both the Hare and Schilling campaigns were quick to issue statements after the debate declaring their candidates were on top following the hour long forum, airing at seven tonight on WQPT, and airing tentatively Sunday afternoon on WGIL. |
