Man Sentenced to 45 Years for Police Shootout
LINCOLN, Ill. (AP) -- A Logan County judge has sentenced a heavily tattooed Lincoln man to 45 years in prison for the attempted murder of the town's now-retired police chief, Stuart Erlenbush.

Circuit Court Judge Thomas Harris imposed the sentence Thursday on 34-year-old Michael "Tattoo" Knuth, who was convicted by a jury last month of attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and aggravated discharge of a firearm. The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports that Knuth received concurrent terms of 10 years for firing the gun and five years for possessing the weapon.

His defense attorney said Knuth wanted to die during the July 20, 2009, shootout with police that followed a reported armed robbery attempt. Knuth was shot nine times after allegedly pulling a gun on police officers.
