More Schools in IL Failing to Make NCLB Standards
(IRN) -- Illinois schools fared better on students' test scores this spring, but the standard went up. The standard imposed by the federal No Child Left Behind law went up by 7.5 points from 2009 to 2010, and while Illinois scores also went up, they didn’t go up enough. Results from the spring exams show that 1,999 (51 percent) of all schools failed to make adequate yearly progress (AYP), an increase from 40 percent last year. When school districts were compared, 559 districts (64 percent) failed to make AYP.

State schools superintendent Chris Koch says Illinois faces worse scores as NCLB standards increase, but says many other states will probably see fewer schools and districts making the standard. Koch says Congress should modify the law, or the federal government will be overwhelmed by the number of schools and districts that will have to be monitored because of test scores.

Total enrollment in Illinois schools dropped a bit from 2009, from 2,070,125 to 2,064,312. The number of kids who are from low-income families jumped from 36 percent to 45 percent.
