Illinois Companies Get Help with Retiree Health
CHICAGO (AP) -- The federal government has approved subsidies to help cover retirees' medical claims for an additional 34 Illinois employers and unions.

The subsidies are part of the new national health care law. They're meant to be a bridge until other provisions of the law come online in 2014.

The subsidies help employers trying to maintain affordable coverage for high-cost retirees.

Among the Illinois-based companies newly approved are Archer Daniels Midland Company Co. and Kraft Foods Global Inc.

The cities of Des Plaines, Naperville, Springfield, Wheaton and Joliet are on the list. And Chicago Public Schools received approval to take part.

The announcement brings the total number of organizations in the program to nearly 3,600 nationwide and 220 in Illinois.
