BREAKING NEWS: Man Struck by Freight Train Dies
UPDATED 10:30am 10/5/10 A Galesburg man who was struck by a freight train near the city's downtown Monday evening has died.

A statement by Galesburg Police indicates they were notified early Tuesday morning that 39-year old Erick Stevenson was pronounced dead at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Police say Stevenson was walking southbound on Kellogg Street near the North Street intersection around 8:15 p-m Monday when he tried to cross the tracks and beat a westbound freight train. Stevenson, police say, did not. They say he was initially taken to Galesburg Cottage Hospital but later was transferred to Peoria.

Police officials say the train was stopped for a time while it was inspected, but it was eventually deemed okay and sent on its way.

No one else was injured.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The victim and Will Stevenson, WGIL News Director, are not related.
