Several in IL Win Transportation Money
(IRN) -- New buses and some big construction and renovation projects are on the way to parts of Illinois , in a federal program called "State of Good Repair." U. S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, the former congressman from Peoria, announced $776 million in grants Monday. LaHood and federal transit administrator Peter Rogoff said the applications totaled $4.2 billion, showing the need nationwide for upgrades. Rogoff says the main criteria included the age of what needed repair or replacement and the local agency's ability to do the project without federal help.

From the Federal Transit Administration’s news release, the Illinois awards are as follows:

Chicago Transit Authority
Project: Bus Garage Rehabilitation and Equipment Upgrades
Grant Amount: $32 million

These funds will go towards the rehabilitation of two of CTA's oldest bus garages -- the 77th Street Garage and the South Shops Heavy Maintenance Facility, both built in 1908 and are long overdue for rehabilitation.

Illinois Department of Transportation
