Quinn Examines Bypass Options
(IRN)-Governor Pat Quinn has appointed an advisory council to assist in the planning and building of a road that has been long talked about.

Travelers as well as truckers from the western part of the state will one day be able to utilize the Elgin-O'Hare West Bypass that will link Interstate 90 with Interstate 294 in the Itasca-Bensenville area.

The existing Elgin-O'Hare expressway runs neither to Elgin nor O’Hare. It actually goes from Hanover Park to Itasca . This project would extend it from Elgin to I-294 at Bensenville, and provide entry to the airport from the west.

Quinn says the next step for the advisory council is to determine how to pay for the estimated $3.6 billion cost of the bypass.

Illinois Department of Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig says one way to fund the project would be to let the Toll Highway Authority manage the roadway and collect tolls.

Quinn says not only will the project keep Chicago as a hub of commerce but the project will produce 21,000 short term and 60,000 long term jobs.

Construction of the 30 mile bypass could start in 2013.
