Quinn Dropping Early Release Entirely
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- A spokeswoman says Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has already taken "substantial" steps to remedy problems with early prison release.

Ashley Cross says Quinn will consider legislative Republicans' ideas for tightening up the way prison inmates get time off for good behavior.

Quinn told The Associated Press earlier this week he isn't interested in reviving the discontinued program allowing up to six months off for meritorious conduct.

Just weeks before Election Day, Republicans are introducing legislation to deny good-conduct time to more criminals, allow tighter controls over how it's used and give the public a say in whether an inmate's released.

The Quinn administration operated two early-release programs last year to cut costs. But one turned into a major scandal after it included some violent offenders.
