Improvements for Local Drug Prevention Efforts Thanks to Grant
An official with the Galesburg Police Department says he believes something that works well now will be even better thanks to a federal grant being received that the city is handling.

Captain Lindsey May says $125,000 a year for five years will vastly help drug prevention efforts in the county. The Office of National Drug Control Policy is giving the Knox County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition the grant.

May tells WGIL the money will help drug abuse prevention organizations get a better read on what each other is doing.

"We have many good things going on in Knox County right now," May said. "A good example is a DARE officer. You have a DARE officer that works in the Galesburg schools, and a DARE officers that works in the schools out in the county. But we sort of lack some of that coordination -- DARE, Care, a lot of the other substance abuse programs that go on. And what this coordinator will do is pull that coordination together, so we can better serve the community, and actually enhance some of the programs that are going on now."

May is referring to a program coordinator position that will be hired and be a part of the Galesburg Police department, that will be paid a salary through the grant.

Some of May's salary will also be paid through the grant.
