Candles Remain Biggest Concern For Firefighters
In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, the Galesburg Fire Department has supplied tips all week to fireproof one's home.

Firefighter Dan Foley says candles have posed the biggest threat as a fire starter. He says it's even difficult for firefighter's wives to understand the risks involved because of the candle's innovation with various aromas and styles.

"The biggest thing is to not leave the room with a candle unattended," Foley said.
"Now the other thing is that you can go to these warmers, which are really cool. You just put it in this warmer, you plug it in, it doesn't light up at all, but it still gives you that aroma that people want."

"So that's a cool thing with the warmers. But we'll (somebody will) probably burn down a house this winter because of candles."

Foley says unattended smoke is the number one cause for death when a fire starts. He says forgetting about a cooking appliance causes the most fires in the country.

Fire Prevention Week concludes Saturday. It is always celebrated the week October 9th falls on because on that same day in 1871 the infamous Chicago Fire caused the most damage before the two day blaze ceased.
