Domestic Violence No Longer Taboo
Domestic violence is an issue facing every community; and Monday night the Galesburg community will "Take Back The Night."

The Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center is sponsoring the event at Lake Storey Pavillion.

Advocate Julie Grupe tells the WGIL morning news domestic violence needs as much awareness as ever.

"It's less of a taboo topic than it used to be, it used to be no one would talk about domestic violence, you swept it under the rug, it was a family problem, you didn't worry about it." Grupe said. "But now people are realizing it's more than that, it's an issue that affects the whole community, not just that family."

"Our goal is to raise awareness, let people know that it's happening here and that it's not okay."

Grupe says Take Back The Night will feature survivor testimonies, musical performances, and a candle light vigil to conclude the evening.

The theme for the event is "We're not gonna take it." Grupe says this is a challenge to the community to come out and make a statement that domestic violence is not acceptable.

The event begins at five Monday evening.
