Alderman Act On Boating Ordinance
A Galesburg man can proceed with his boating business after over an hour of deliberations Monday night ended with alderman approving a zoning change.

Galesburg Council Members voted 5 to 3 to approve the zoning change from B1 to B2 for 1210 East Losey Street.

Some neighbors of owner Larry Carlson were against the change, saying the property has evolved into an eye sore with a collection of boats resembling a junk yard.

But Alderman Jeremy Karlin says he admires Carlson's dedication to the boat repair shop.

"This isn't perfect, but what we have is an idividual who's put a significant investment into the property, is willing to do more," Karlin said. "Given the nature of the zoning in the area I don't think it changes significantly the character of the neighborhood specifically with what's happening there."

Alderman Wayne Dennis was behind changing the zoning ordinance because if Carlson's property was 60 feet to the west the zoning would already allow for his business.

Carlson says if six feet is as high as he can go with a fence, then he will consider stipulating restrictions of the boats he brings in to rehab.

Aside from the ordinance change, council members also approved to accept a resolution for a Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan to combat the natural disaster vulnerabilities that face Galesburg.
