Karlin To Represent Sheley Again
A judge in Whiteside County has given accused spree killer Nicholas Sheley his choice in defense attorney, a month after indicating he didn't need one, and the choice is familiar locally.

The "Sterling Daily Gazette" reports 14th Circuit Chief Judge Jeffrey O'Connor Friday ruled that Jeremy Karlin could be selected to represent Sheley in his first Whiteside County murder trial.

The Gazette says Sheley indicated that he only wanted Karlin to represent him in the death of 93-year old Russell Reed of Sterling, not any of the four other deaths he's accused of committing there in late June of 2008.

Karlin represented Sheley in the trial that resulted in him being convicted in the death of 65-year old Ronald Randall in Knox County during that same timeframe.

O'Connor reportedly okayed paying Karlin the same rate he got in Knox County -- 120-dollars an hour.

However, Sheley's trial there won't start as soon as he had hoped.

O'Connor postponed the November first trial, and scheduled hearings for myriad motions on November 3rd and 4th.

Sheley also is accused of killing an Arkansas couple in Missouri as part of the suspected two-state murder spree.
