Unemployment Down Statewide and Locally
Unemployment is on the decline again around the area, after a few months of increases upward.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security says the September unemployment rate in Illinois is down half a percentage point at first glance from August to September, down to 9.5%, while Knox County has improved also by two-tenths to 8.3%.

The state says the preliminary September figures for the city of Galesburg indicate 32 more jobs were created since August. The city's unemployment rate now stands at 8.9%, up three-tenths from a month before.

Statistics combining Knox and Warren Counties to create a Galesburg-area indicate a jobless rate of 8.1%. However, Warren County preliminary September jobless rates are up a tenth of a point, standing at 7.4%.

In Stark County those unemployed increased by ten to 249 people, a two-tenths difference from August.

Compared to last year, September of 2011 in the Galesburg-area saw the largest gains in financial activities jobs but heavy declines in retail trade and educational-health services.
