Library Board Forced To Increase Budget
The Galesburg Public Library Board of Trustees is forced to do something it said it wouldn't do in order to help out the city -- increase its budget.

The Board Thursday voted to approve an amended budget for the next fiscal year totaling around one-and-a-half million dollars -- 15-thousand dollars higher than their original budget that was virtually the same as this fiscal year.

But Library Board Treasurer Mike Kroll says the budget amendment couldn't be avoided.

"We have had to increase the pension amount, last year our pensions were $77,908 dollars," Kroll said. "Because of the change from IMRF they are now 90,018 dollars, which is a substantial increase. We also had an increase of about 25% in the city health insurance, which went from $59,426 dollars this year to $74,226 with about a $15,000 dollar increase."

That's resulting in a one-point-three million dollar property tax levy increase being requested of the City of Galesburg -- up 52-thousand dollars.

The board approved that as well.

Board members also reviewed the Open Meetings Act Thursday -- this, after admitting they were in violation several months ago when they held the meeting that resulted in the hiring of new library director Harriet Zipfel.
