Winter Lunch Program Gets State Recognition
The program that gave Galesburg School District students a free lunch during the district's winter break is being recognized at the state level.

District-205 says "The Lunch Spot" program, will be recognized at the Illinois State Board of Education's "Those Who Excel" Awards ceremony October 22nd in Bloomington-Normal.

The program will be given an "Award of Excellence."

The Lunch Spot was open to any district-205 student who needed lunch during the month-long winter break in the last school year. Various locations around town centered around neighborhoods were used as food pick-up points. Individuals, businesses, the City of Galesburg, and Knox College were among those that contributed or volunteered to the program. Knox College students, for example, gave some of what was their lunch money to the program.

Galesburg Alderman Peter Schwartzman, Knoxville Alderman Jim Eastwood, City Human Relations Commission member Tianna Cervantez, and others, helped head up the program. A number of the organizers will be on hand for the awards ceremony.
