Protests Highlight School Board Meeting
The Galesburg School Board got what supporters say was a crucial message both inside, and outside, their board meeting Monday night.

The board was greeted by an estimated four-hundred people chanting and picketing outside Lincoln School Monday -- members of the Galesburg Education Association and other unions urging the passage of a new contract two months after the old one expired.

But a couple residents spoke about the need more directly with the school board. One of them was parent Jennifer Brown, who says she's witnessed teachers doing great things.

"I've witnessed teachers tutoring students not only after school, but on weekends and at nights so the student would not fall behind," she said. I've witnessed the teacher help the students find bugs on their own time for a bugs project, so the student would not fall behind."

Retired teacher Jim Jacobs says he is not sure the district truly appreciates its teachers.

"I think that somewhere along the line, the district has lost focus on the heart and soul of education and that's what goes on in the classroom between the teachers and the students and what goes on between the teachers and the parents."

District administrators and board members did not comment. Mediation sessions are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday next week.

No major action items were before the Galesburg School Board Monday night.
