Downtown Abingdon Building Closer to Being Demolished
It appears that a downtown Abingdon building that's next in a series of demolitions to dilapidated properties downtown could be easier than thought.

That's according to Abingdon City Engineer Neil Smith, who told aldermen last night that it was originally thought that the former bank building near City Hall and the police station would have to be torn down in sections, owing to environmental concerns and the fact there's still a vault at the building.

But Smith says it's since been learned that's not the case at all.

"They suggested that we go in and remove all the above grade portions of the building remove all the materials in the building cavity. Then they go in and test all the interior faces of the basement wall and the vault, anything down there that has espectice they have to take that out. Once they identify anything with espectice on it if there is anything it's gone and they'll take all the interior walls."

In other words, Smith says, all the demolition work can be done at one time, which he says is good news.

Bids are currently being sought for the work and will be due in November.

Mayor Roger Stegall says he's pleased that the project can move forward.
