Long Time Tourism Director Honored
Diane Bruening served as Galesburg's Tourism Director for over a decade before retiring in 2011.

Bruening died over the summer but friends, family and co-workers made sure her memory would always live on in Galesburg.

Thursday afternoon a plaque honoring Burening was placed on the Giant rock outside the Galesburg Welcome Center.

Bruening's son Jared tells WGIL they couldn't have picked a better place to put a plaque in her name because from the time she was Tourism Director to the day she retired she was looking for something to spice that rock up.

"If you look around the welcome center and see how decorated it is, she wanted to make sure everything was decorated and the rock just sitting there with no decoration was something she really didn't like and now having something a purpose for that rock and a decoration on it really would that would make so happy to see that there's something done with that rock now."

Bruening says his mother grew to love Galesburg and saw all sorts of possibilities in Galesburg to bring tourism to the city.

The plaque simply reads "In Memory of Diane Bruening Director of Tourism 1998-2010."
