The Galesburg City Council Finishes Last Week's Meeting
Finishing up last week's Galesburg City Council meeting, Alderman made quick work of several project bids as well as salary proposals for the Galesburg Township.

Alderman voted unanimously to approve the demolition of five properties in Galesburg with Russell Fleming being the lone dissenter on property clean-ups and the renovation of a sand bunker at Bunker Links Golf Course.

After the Special Meeting, Alderman went into a budget workshop to discuss revenue options and tax scenarios.

City Manager Todd Thompson tells WGIL that alderman seemed open to a utility tax.

"What we put together is several different options different mixes of utility tax and property tax. I call this the base budget, it's the budget that shows revenue neutral impact of the general fund. If you don't raise any revenue the general fund goes down about $519,000 so those are sort of your two extremes."

Thompson divided the scenarios into four options.

Some options involve raising the property levy without taxing utilities, others involve taxing utilities but not property.

Reactions were split on which option the council preferred.

Aldermen Allen, Schwartzman, and City Manager Thompson approve of taxing utilities.

Aldermen Fleming, Dennis, and Goad would like to see a small increase of "point 4 percent" in the property levy.

The council plans to have further budget sessions in November.
