Bond Set For Woman Accused in Fatal Accident Near Knox College
FIRST REPORTED 3:00pm 10/29/12, UPDATED 5am 10/30/12 Bond has been set for a Galesburg woman facing at least four felony charges for allegedly striking and killing a Knox College student with her car early Sunday

Prosecutors had asked for a $200,000 bond in the case of 33-year old Lakeesha Smith, but Judge James Stewart Monday afternoon instead set bond at $100,000.

Smith faces Class-One felony counts of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death, and a Class-Two felony count of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, along with lesser felony counts of those charges.

Prosecutors added a felony charge of Reckless Homicide after the bond hearing.

Smith was arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly striking Knox College student Tundun Lawani while driving down South Street in-between West and Cedar Streets around 3:30 am.

Assistant State's Attorney Elisa Tanner says Lawani was crossing the street when the accident occurred.

She says Smith was arrested at her McKnight Street home, and told police she was scared in part because she didn't have insurance on the car, and that she had been drinking.

Family members of Smith said they would be hiring an attorney in the case. Smith will next be in court next Monday at 9 am with her attorney.

Smith was on a felony probation program out of Peoria County when the accident occurred.
