Republican Incumbent Bobby Schilling and Democratic challenger Cheri Bustos had a chance to swing the momentum of the District 17 Congressional race last night.

The two candidates will had the first of three debates in Moline.

WGIL carried the broadcast courtesy of WQAD.

Schilling tried to defend his record as being fiscally responsible.

"We don't need taxes spenders in Washington D.C. We've gotta have people that are looking to find problems, solutions to the problems and making sure that every time you answer isn't lets just raise taxes and fees on the American people."

The debate comes amid strong attacks by both sides on their opponents voting records.

The District 17 race is one of the most hotly contested in the country.

Bustos attacked Schilling's voting record on jobs.

"Congressman you voted in favor for triggered cuts to out largest employer at a time when you were expecting somebody else to come up with the answer, I think it was a dangerous vote, I think it was an irresponsible vote, I think it's time you take ownership for it."
