Durbin Comments on National Politics, Who Should Replace Obama
Of the many issues facing U.S. Senate Democrats, the first one may be figuring out how many of them there really are. U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the majority whip, points out the results of two races remain in doubt (Alaska and Minnesota), plus there could be a run-off in Georgia, so it may or may not make a difference in voting power to keep Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) in the Democratic caucus.

The former Democrat went so far as to campaign with John McCain and speak at the Republican National Convention. Durbin says even though Lieberman almost always votes with the Democrats, he's "troubled" by the idea of Lieberman continuing as chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Says Durbin: "(Some Democrats) are concerned that Senator Lieberman enjoys all of the benefits of being in the Democratic caucus and didn't show that same level of loyalty."

Durbin says he will not share names publicly on whom Gov. Rod Blagojevich should appoint to the other Senate seat from Illinois, to succeed President-elect Barack Obama. Durbin says he hopes to give some recommendations to the governor soon, but he has "no idea" who really has Blagojevich's ear.

Durbin added extending unemployment benefits should be the next thing the nation does to ease the economy, adding another economic stimulus payment to citizens wouldn't help if people simply save that money.
