Carl Sandburg College Investigating Use of Wind Power
Carl Sandburg College is looking into another way the institution's president says it can save money on its energy bills.

Tom Schmidt says the college recently entered into a memorandum of understanding with Johnson Controls to conduct a feasibility study on whether or not a wind turbine could be put up anywhere in the college's 10-county district and generate enough energy for college's needs.

Schmidt tells WGIL it's already been found viable for a wind turbine to be put up, and now analysis will look at whether this can be done without money from taxpapyers. "Our hope is that the results of the formal analysis would indicate that there be no rationale to incur any costs on behalf of the taxpayers," Schmidt said. "In fact, this project could be paid 100% from the revenues that would be generated from the electricity; and, so, in that regard, there's probably not a good reason to not do it."

Schmidt says what's more, if a wind turbine can be built, it could serve as a hands-on training tool for students entering into the college's new alternative fuels course of study.

Johnson Controls recently started the study; the memo of understanding states it be complete within 120-days.
