State Employees Protest Job Cuts
Hundreds of state employees are urging Gov. Rod Blagojevich to sign Senate Bill 1103 in order to prevent steep funding cuts to the Department of Children and Family Services that would ultimately lead to at least 160 job cuts statewide.

According to AFSCME, the union that represents the bulk of state workers, those facing the layoffs include investigators who examine reports of child abuse and neglect.

Kelley Talbot with Voices for Illinois Children, a statewide children's advocacy group, says S.B. 1103 is a result of cuts to the state budget. "Senate Bill1103 is a separate bill meant to restore some of the funding for certain programs that had been cut through the governor's [line item] veto," Talbot said.

S.B. 1103 was passed in both the House and Senate with strong bipartisan support. It would provide additional funds to DCFS, Human Services, substance abuse treatment programs and agencies that care for individuals with developmental disabilities. It would also prevent the closure state parks and historic sites, such as the Carl Sandburg Birthplace in Galesburg, and the Bishop Hill State Historic Site.
