License Plate Stickers Going Up; To Pay for New ISP Cars
The cost of renewing your car registration could go up $1 to help pay for new cars for the Illinois State Police. A bill that has passed the Illinois House and Senate would raise the fee to $79.

The sponsor, State Sen. Tony Munoz (D-Chicago), says it's a safety issue. State Sen. Mike Jacobs (D-East Moline) says a couple of mishaps this year led to an inspection of all State Police vehicles -- an inspection which 43 percent of the cars failed.

Opponents say the fund may not be safe from one of the governor's special sweeps, but supporters say they've been assured the money can be used only to replace the patrol cars.

If the bill becomes law, the increase would go into effect with the renewal stickers that expire in January 2011.

S.B. 450 passed the Senate, 47-7, after having passed the House, 75-15, and now goes to the governor.
