Casino License Candidates Narrowed Down
Seven applicants for the state's 10th and final casino license are whittled down to three. Members of the Illinois Gaming Board Friday announced the following finalists: Des Plaines, Rosemont and Waukegan.

Other contenders had included Calumet City, Country Club Hills, Harvey and Stickney. The location at Stickney would have been in or near an existing horse race track.

The bids for the license range from $100 million put up by investors for the Des Plaines location, to $425 million, coming from investors intent on bringing a casino to Rosemont. Investors hoping Waukegan will snag the license put up $225 million.

Rosemont is not new to the process. The city had been slated to receive the 10th license but was denied in 2001 after allegations that the investment group the city was working with had links to the mob.

Gaming Board members voted unanimously in favor of the Rosemont and Waukegan sites, while the vote for Des Plaines was 3-2 in favor.

Michael Fries, chief counsel for the Gaming Board, says he hopes to award the license by the end of the year. Finalists will have a chance to present their ideas to the board Nov. 25.
