Another Dollar General Opening in Monmouth
A retailer with thousands of stores in dozens of states, including a location in Monmouth, plans to build a new store in the Maple City.

Tennessee-based Dollar General has over 300 stores in Illinois, including one at 1120 South Main Street. The Monmouth City Council Monday night approved a variance request from Dollar General to place a big sign at the site of the new store to be constructed at the northwest corner of North Main Street and Industrial Park Drive next to Burger King.

Monmouth City Administrator Eric Hanson tells WGIL it appears the city will have two Dollar Generals. "We haven't received any indication they're going to close the one on the south end of town -- just add another retail space out on our corridor. And it's nice to have new development going up, that's for sure."

Hanson says no target date is set for construction to begin on the proposed 9,000 square foot store, but he anticipates it'll be either be late summer or early next fall.

Dollar General refers to itself on its website as the nation's largest "small-box discount retailer." The company operates over 8,000 stores in 35 states and employs 71,500 people. Dollar General had $9.5 billion in sales in Fiscal Year 2007.
