Area Corn Harvest Almost Complete
Chilly and damp fall weather is doing its best to slow down the end of the Illinois corn harvest.

The weekly crop report from the USDA shows, as of last Sunday, 88 percent of the corn harvested. That was just a gain of 8 percentage points, blamed primarily on wet fields that allowed for less than four days suitable for work across the state.

USDA Crop Statistician Brad Schwab says the weather is what you'd expect. "The average temperature for the week was 1.1 degrees below normal, while average precipitation was .32 inches above normal," Schwab said. "Topsoil moisture came in at one-percent short, 85-percent adequate, and 14-percent surplus."

The average temperature in western Illinois was 39.7 degrees, nearly a degree cooler than the state average, and the region received .58 inches of rain.

The area's corn harvest going into this week was 90 percent complete. The central and southeast crop reporting districts lead the state with corn 97 percent harvested. The northwest region, by comparison, is at 73 percent.

Schwab says while the delay in the corn harvest this year may be an inconvenience, the crop is on track for a near-record yield. The latest forecast shows 179 bushels per acre, just short of the high mark of 180 in 2004.
