Fire Destroys Vacant Woodhull Building
A plume of smoke could be seen for miles around at the site of a building that was on fire in Woodhull yesterday afternoon that was eventually destroyed.

Clover Township Fire Chief Don McDowell says firefighters discovered a vacant building ablaze at the intersection of West Second Avenue and North Division Street around 1:30 Sunday afternoon, and quickly determined they needed to have much more manpower.

McDowell tells WGIL he needed to call for more manpower several times. "We've kind of got a thing set up where we know who we want to have come, and we call them as soon as we think we need them," McDowell said. "I'd have to go back and do a little investigating for sure, but there's probably somewhere around eight to ten departments."

One of those departments was from Galesburg, who sent their aerial ladder truck to the scene. Others included Rio, New Windsor, Orion, Alpha, and others.

No cause has been determined, and McDowell says it's not clear where the fire might have started in the two-story building, which, in addition to apartments, also used to house a corner grocery store.

The fire also damaged a couple nearby businesses due to either a roof collapse or other smoke and water damage, and onlookers were startled at one point as a wall collapsed sending bricks into the street.

There were no injuries, and it took about three hours for the major part of the fire to be put out.
