A Possible Happier Environment in Springfield?
With half of the Illinois Capitol's "Four Tops" turning over for the New Year, one of the returning cast members is optimistic things will be more harmonious.

Senators have chosen John Cullerton (D-Chicago) and Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) to lead their respective caucuses. Senate President Emil Jones (D-Chicago) is retiring, while Senate Minority Leader Frank Watson (R-Greenville) gave up his leadership post after a stroke.

Many people who watch the Capitol believe Jones is closely aligned with Gov. Rod Blagojevich, and that House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) is an enemy of both. Cullerton has been an ally of Madigan, which may change the dynamic when the governor and legislative leaders attempt to guide the state. "I guess if you're the governor, you (say) 'Wow, I'm not so sure I'm happy with the Cullerton pick,'" says Cross. "We have to figure out what's best for all of us as Illinoisans, and I think John Cullerton will do his best to represent his caucus and do the right thing."

Of the incoming Senate Minority Leader, Cross says, "Chris is clearly her own person, will do what is best for her caucus, and will be a strong advocate for her caucus."
