New Galesburg Development Ordinance Almost Complete
Eight years of work is now down to the final months for an effort to combine several facets of the city's zoning and planning efforts into one group of policies.

The Galesburg Plan Commission held a public hearing Tuesday night on the proposed Unified Development Ordinance.

The ordinance, among other things, would combine the city's Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals into one committee, and also combines a number of different types of property zones into less of them.

Mike Hoffman of Evanston-based Teska Associates has been working on the ordinance, and says there are some things new to any of the city's development policies included in the new document, including one that came at the request of the public.

"Desire to have some landscape regulations in place. You've had businesses that have done a nice job of landscaping, you've had some businesses that come in and haven't done any landscaping. So why not have some minimal standards for all new development," Hoffman said.

Other changes include requiring permits for construction trailers, temporary real estate offices, and other outdoor events, but would not require a permit for some types of temporary outdoor sales.

The Plan Commission approved the ordinance Tuesday night. It now goes to the Galesburg City Council for its approval, but it's likely not going to come up at Monday night's meeting.
