Green Party Hoping to Make Itself Known in Illinois
The Green Party is enjoying its first election with major-party ballot status in Illinois .

The Green Party won major-party status by getting more than 5 percent of the vote in the 2006 race for governor. The man who got those votes, Rich Whitney of Carbondale , says some of the races for Congress are going well for the Green candidates.

Major party status allows the Green easier access to the ballot. They have fielding 56 candidates – the most by any third party in Illinois since the 1920s. Among the Green Party candidates are 17 candidates for the General Assembly, and candidates for County Board and other county offices in 11 counties.
