Holiday Reminder to "Click It or Ticket"
Watch your speed, put on your seat belt and pay attention to driving rather than your phone or music. That's the advice from the Illinois State Police, local police and the Illinois Department of Transportation regarding your travels this holiday weekend. Those forces are letting motorists know that two traffic enforcement campaigns will mean more troopers and police on roads around the Thanksgiving holiday.

"Click It or Ticket" will be a program targeting those who are not compliant with the seat belt laws that is being enforced as well as a specific holiday campaign called "Stay Alive on the I's," which began Wednesday and will be operational at least until Sunday. Secretary of IDOT, Milt Sees, says the goal is better driving and fewer traffic fatalities.

Illinois State Police officials say they will post a trooper every ten miles and will enforce all traffic laws but their focus will be on what he calls the "fatal five" which are driving under the influence, speeding, occupant restraint, following too closely and improper lane usage.

IDOT reports so far this year there has been 886 traffic deaths which is about 200 fewer than last year and officials hope that trend will continue and lead to an 80-year low in roadway deaths in Illinois. Last year over the Thanksgiving holiday IDOT reported 12 fatalities and over 650 injuries encapsulating the holiday weekend.
