Some Stores Might Do Better Than Others on Black Friday
The down economy doesn't change the fact that today is Black Friday, the traditional start of the holiday gift-buying season, with stores offering bargains, especially to shoppers who arrive early.

Retailers realize shoppers are inclined to spend carefully this year, postponing the purchase of big-ticket items amid job insecurity and a desire to work down credit card debt instead of building up more.

The stores are adjusting their inventories and marketing to deal with these economic realities.

Peter Gill of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association says it's hard for shopkeepers to be optimistic this year, but not impossible. He says discount stores -- those that generate sales based on low prices alone -- figure to have a decent season.

The association projects a two percent growth in sales this holiday season over last year. Over the last ten years, the year-over-year growth is typically around 4.5 percent, so by comparison, this figures to be a poor year in the retail business.
