Economic Downturn Somewhat Concerns Galesburg Shoppers
Some area residents say they're mindful of the current economic situation, but say they're not going to let that deter them from trying to have a Merry Christmas.

Galesburg and other area residents were definitely out in force Friday morning, and most of them say in some way or another, the economic downturn is affecting their shopping.

Jennifer Milroy of Galesburg was among those souls out at Sandburg Mall and already had a few shopping bags full of items well before 6am. Milroy tells WGIL for her, some welcome economic relief came just in time for Black Friday. "It does help that gas prices are down," Milroy said.

Gas is now down to $1,72 a gallon at most Galesburg-area filling stations. Milroy says she has several children to buy for, and she admits she tends to go overboard every year on holidays.

Patrick McCommons of Kewanee was waiting in line for Sears at Sandburg Mall, and tells WGIL the economy makes it harder to have disposable income, but he and his wife have a strategy for Christmas spending. "(What I spend on Christmas) is about the same every year," McCommons said. "I try and budget it early, so everybody gets the same amount of money spent on them every year."

Many people we talked with said they would try and spend the same amount of money this year as last, but some do admit they'll probably be spending less.
