Concerns Over Proposed Tower at Hawthorne Center
A bank that's in the process of expanding its operations in Galesburg will likely get to do something that it says will help communicate with its branches, but without a small amount of opposition.

The Galesburg Plan Commission recently approved a request by Tompkins State Bank following a public hearing, to construct a communications tower in the Hawthorne Center next to the Community Bank of Galesburg A-T-M.

Tompkins is merging with Community Bank, and the bank's engineer, Kevan Cooper, says it very well could be a communications tower the bank can't live without.

"It's going to allow this ATM facility to communicate with the various branches of Tompkins and Community, will become one banking business," Cooper said.

"This is just something that once this merger takes place it's going to be important for their business in order for their new facilities to communicate."

The only opposition during the hearing came from an official with the Inter-Community Cancer Center, who was concerned about what the tower would do to the aesthetics of the area.

The proposal now goes to the Galesburg City Council for its approval.
