First Major Snow Across State Leaves Drivers Slipping And Sliding
The National Weather Service says the season's first major snowstorm across the northern third of the state is expected to be followed by high wind speeds, which will cause drifting and even more slippery road conditions.

The forecast says wind speeds could gust up to 35 miles per hour at times before dying down by early Monday afternoon. Wet snow was falling from downtown Chicago to the Galesburg area at 3:30 Monday morning, leaving behind several inches of accumulation. The totals vary anywhere from four to more than eight inches of snow.

Plows got started salting roads throughout the state Sunday night, and crews were out early Monday morning as well. One state truck was spotted around 4:30 a-m southbound on Route 41 between Galesburg and Abingdon.

Police and tow trucks have been extremely busy since yesterday morning responding to a slew of car accidents and numerous vehicles in ditches on area roads and Interstate 74. Police are urging motorists to drive very carefully if they have to go out, allow extra time, and buckle up.
