Tree Lighting Ceremony Monday in Galesburg for World AIDS Day
A ceremony will be held on Monday afternoon in Galesburg to observe World AIDS Day.

World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1st and it was established by the World Health Organization in 1988. World AIDS Day provides governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.

The HIV/AIDS Task Force of Western Illinois is holding the annual World AIDS Day Tree Lighting Ceremony at 5:30 p-m in the Memorial Garden at the Knox County Health Department. Besides the tree lighting, the ceremony will also include speakers, music and a check presented to the Friends of Persons Living With HIV/AIDS organization.

State statistics from October show more than 34,500 people living in Illinois have HIV or AIDS. Records show the number of new HIV and AIDS cases in the state have gone down since 2005.

The Department of Health and Human Services says in 2007 the estimated number of people living with HIV worldwide was 33.2 million, and there were 2.7 million people newly infected.
