IL Attorney General Offers 2008 Safe Shopping Guide
Just in time for the holiday shopping season, the Illinois Attorney General's Office is putting out the second annual Safe Shopping Guide.

The guide contains descriptions of hundreds of products that have been recalled this year. They include toys, furniture, jewelry and clothing. The guide also contains color photos.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan says this year's Safe Shopping Guide will help adults determine if the toy they're buying poses a safety threat to children.

"They will get a brief description of the item and why it was recalled, where it was sold and at what point in the year it was actually recalled."

Madigan says so far in 2008 there have been more than 170 recalls covering 569 different products and over 18-million items. She says there's special concern this year because many parents are shopping at resale shops, thrift stores or on web sites like e-Bay and Craig's List---where recalled toys and jewelry are still offered for sale.

Besides listing recalled products and providing information about them, the 110-page Safe Shopping Guide also includes information about lead poisoning and encourages concerned parents to have their child's blood level checked. Testing clinics are listed in the back of the guide, which is available on the attorney general's website or by calling the A-G's office.
