Mangieri Continues As Judge
A Knox County native appointed to the bench following the retirement of another judge was able to fend off potential scandal and a formidable opponent in his bid to stay on the bench.

An unofficial tally of the six counties of the Ninth Judicial Circuit indicates Democrat Paul Mangieri defeated Monmouth Attorney, Republican James Standard, by a 51-percent to 49-percent margin during Tuesday's election. Several counties went the way of Standard, but both Galesburg and Knox County voters supported Mangieri.

Mangieri tells WGIL he really made sure people throughout the Ninth Circuit knew who he was. "It was a back to basics campaign," Mangieri said. "I did a lot of door-to-door (campaigning). I had two weeks of vacation that I saved up; and over the last two weeks, I knocked on doors Hancock, McDonough, Fulton Counties. And everywhere I went, I think the people were excited that a candidate would actually come up and meet them. And I think that makers all the difference in the world, especially in a local campaign."

Mangieri says his service in public office and in the military helped propel him to victory, along with the positive campaign he says he ran.

Mangieri was accused of mishandling money during his time as State's Attorney, by the man that replaced him, John Pepmeyer, but was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing following a special audit.

Standard declined to comment following the results coming in, asking reporters to contact him later Wednesday.
