Split Victory for Knox County Sheriff
The voters in the City of Galesburg, by majority, differed from those in the rest of the Knox County, but the current Sheriff will continue to serve in that role for two more years. Knox County Sheriff David Clague defeated Republican and retired Sheriffs Deputy Gary Ryner in Tuesday's election, 56-percent to 44-percent. Galesburg voters overwhelmingly supported Clague, but the majority in the rest of the county went to Ryner.

Clague tells WGIL while he's glad he won, he knows there are plenty of people that didn't want him there. "I assure the citizens of Knox County that one of the primary goals as the Sheriff is overseeing the budget," Clague said. "That is being done on a daily basis. I think that's very important since we all pay taxes. I can assure the county, the citizens that voted for Mr. Ryner, that they're in good hands."

Clague says he realizes that people don't like change, but he says everything will work out just fine if people will give him a chance.

Ryner was unavailable for comment following the votes being tabulated. Clague says he believes it's his experience in law enforcement and administration that got him the victory.

The two-year unexpired term was left up for a vote following former Sheriff Jim Thompson's retirement in the middle of last year, amid allegations of financial mismanagement by current State's Attorney John Pepmeyer.

Pepmeyer, by the way, was unopposed in Tuesday's election.
