"Mike vs. Mike" in State Senate Race Featuring Candidate from Mercer County
It's a battle of Mikes for the Illinois State Senate seat in the Moline area.

State Sen. Mike Jacobs (D-East Moline), only three years on the job, is trying to fend off another challenge. Jacobs was appointed to the seat upon the retirement of his father, Denny Jacobs, in 2005. Mike Jacobs defeated Paul Rumler of Moline in the Democratic primaries in 2006 and 2008, and beat Republican James Beals of Moline in the 2006 general election.

This time, his opponent is Republican Mike Bertelsen, the Mercer County treasurer.

Bertelsen says he recognizes he faces a challenge in a strong Democratic district, but he says voters want their state government to work better.

Jacobs says he made a mistake in initially supporting Gov. Rod Blagojevich. "Sometimes you can get fooled," he said. "Rod would come into a room and meet everybody in the room, and everybody within earshot of him was gonna like the guy. He's likeable. He just turned out to be a poor governor."

Jacobs says he has considered running for governor himself.
