District 205 Administrator Critical of No Child Left Behind Law; School Board Retreat Held Saturday
One of the administrators for the Galesburg School District says he doesn't see some areas of slight declines in the number of students meeting or exceeding standards in the Federal No Child Left Behind Law as much of a problem.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Joel Estes told the Galesburg School Board during a retreat Saturday that scores overall on state standardized tests went up; however, the percentages of those students making Adequate Yearly Progress declined slightly in several schools.

Estes tells WGIL what people need to understand when they see scores like those for District-205, is that they have to put them into context. "We are entering the phases now of No Child Left Behind where the sanctions that are in that law are going to start catching more and more and more schools," Estes said. "I've been pretty public in saying that a lot of the portions of that law are anti-logical."

Estes says he believes No Child Left Behind is intended to punish schools rather than reward schools for the good work that they're doing.

Estes says for the fourth year in a row, Galesburg High School did not make AYP, and while he believes that's no reflection on the teaching staff there, if it continues to be the case, restructuring there will have to occur.
