Tax Levy Changes in District 205
Property values are estimated to go up for another year in the Galesburg School District, and while that's translating into a smaller tax levy for homeowners in the district, that doesn't mean your tax bill will go down.

The Galesburg School Board Monday night voted to approve the 2008 Tax Levy. The district will be asking for $15.8 million from property owners, a little more than a million dollars from the 2007 levy year. But in dollar terms, the levy per $100 in assessed valuation will go down to around $4.05, compared to $4.13.

District 205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Paul Woehlke says the lower levy still equals a higher property tax bill.

"For an owner of a $50,000 home, this would mean approximately $13 higher tax dollar value than last year. Or the owner of a $100,000 home, about $26 added tax."

Woehlke says the 6.4 percent total increase in property values is attributed, in large part, to the new Seminary Square shopping center. Retail property was the biggest gainer, he says, in assessed valuation.

However, Woehlke is estimating property values to go down 1 percent next year.

The Galesburg School Board Monday night also heard from several parents who are dissatisfied with the quality and nutritional value of school lunches provided by vendor Aramark. There was, however, no board action taken.
