Galesburg Honors Veterans
Cold, wind, and rain, couldn't keep both Veterans and citizens away from the Veterans Memorial in Lincoln Park Tuesday morning.

About one hundred local residents and veterans came out to hear music, speeches, and salutes to former Congressional Medal of Honor winners from Knox County.

Chairman of the Community Veterans Memorial Committee, Ward 6 Alderman Wayne Allen, was the master of ceremonies, and the crowd of people also heard from Barbara Hopkins and retired 9th Circuit Court judge Harry Bulkeley and their tributes to the medal of honor winners. Hopkins spoke about James B. Stockdale, who flew over 400 missions in the US Navy, and Bulkeley paid tribute to Robert H. Dunlap and Phillip Sydney Post. Bulkeley told the crowd what made Dunlap such a great soldier, and a great man.

"If you knew Bobby, and you knew how determined he was, and the kind of heart that Bobby had, you knew that he was just the kind of guy that would have done that," Bulkeley said. "One of his commanding officers said that he was a very quiet man, but capable of inspiring other men by his actions."

Mayor Gary Smith was also on hand to salute veterans of all former and current wars as well as those who have served or are currently serving in any military branch. VFW Quarter Master and 7th Ward Alderman Mike Lummis delivered the benediction, and the singing group Joyful Noyz also paid tribute to veterans.
