New Face on Monmouth City Council
A Monmouth native who had a successful coaching and administrative career in schools in Iowa and Illinois is now a member of the Monmouth City Council.

Aldermen this week approved Mayor Rod Davies' selection of Monmouth High School and Monmouth College graduate Les Dollinger to fill the seat on the council from the Second Ward left vacant when Dave Smith passed away in September.

Dollinger, City Administrator Eric Hanson says, returned to the Maple City earlier this decade after 30-plus years of being an administrator and coach in Iowa, and later finishing his tenure in Hillsboro, Illinois.

It's those credentials, Hanson tells WGIL, that seem to make Dollinger the ideal candidate. "The general consensus among the council is he's going to be a great addition to the council, a great fit, and understands the work that we're trying to get accomplished here in the City of Monmouth," Hanson said. "We're very happy to have him."

Hanson says Mayor Rod Davies referred to the appointment as bittersweet, but believes the second ward seat is being left in good hands.

Dollinger will fill the remainder of Smith's term, which expires next year, at which time it will be up for election.

The Monmouth City Council this week approved the purchase of two new dump trucks for the city, and entered into a two-year agreement with Integrys Energy for electricity for city properties at about 5.5 cents per killowatt. Hanson says that should save the city about 25-percent on its electrical bills.
