Secretary of State Offers Early Retirement Incentive
The Illinois Secretary of State's office is offering an incentive to long-time workers: $5,000, if they'll leave by the end of the year.

Secretary Jesse White is offering the early retirement incentive in order to save money by hiring younger workers, and perhaps leaving some jobs unfilled. SOS spokesman Henry Haupt says the offer's being made to 318 workers who've been with the state for at least 30 years. He says front-line staff would be immediately replaced with entry-level workers, but management positions may stay unfilled.

He says even if all positions are filled, the SOS would save $4 million a year by rotating out older, higher-salaried workers. The incentive money will come from the SOS budget, which does not receive money from the recent increase in license and other fees. That money goes directly to the building and construction program.
